reasonably sherlock literally can’t promise that she wont get hurt and like this is such a dick-in-an-action-movie move. but he does. and sherlock has this immense emotional life where like, the showrunner doherty described him primarily as HYPERSENSITIVE, not as a deduction brain attic machine; hypersensitive. he is so aware of everything because he takes so much of it in. so the way he has filtered this, as this dude who is especially now kind of essentially broken, is structured around logic, solutions and information. i think this partially leads to his expressions of sexism and grandstanding/inappropriateness.

like in original acd canon, on some levels sherlock rejects emotionalism and feeling (because he is wonderfully empathetic, problems with casting that as a “more human” take on sherlock aside) as incompatible with logic. he projects these issues on women though he has that really big capacity for empathy and awareness of power/abuse; so u get shit like “pillowy means to an end,” “eclipses the whole of her gender,” etc. but the thing is that, and i think the “hypersensitive” thing confirms this, that elementary as a narrative sees through the false dichotomy of this. sherlock’s greatest strength and talent comes from his sensitivity and his completely intact sense of morality even with all of the Dangerous Man window dressings.

so when sherlock is not rational, that is really significant. he is making an essentially emotional promise to watson even if it makes no real sense and has no real consequence; what if some henchmen had come to their (our) home and joan hadn’t followed sherlock? joan is right!! but he means it!!!!!! he also doesn’t kill moran ultimately, i want to think, because it is morally wrong even though he can find it within his intellectual faculties to justify it as rational. he acts the way he does in that episode because he is feeling shit; he wants revenge, he can JUSTIFY this revenge to himself, and is haunted by his inability to make that particular call. he told watson knowing she could intervene, and ultimately wounded moran both just enough and impossibly non-fatally (watson commenting on this!) for a cover story, but still is left saying that he didn’t know if it was the right choice at the end. oh honey. it’s ok. dont be cry.

IN CONCLUSION maybe possibly i am giving a cbs procedural too much credit wrt messages on gender, etc. communicated thru a sherlock holmes adaption. but everything about this episode really cemented these ideas for me.

like idk, i was pretty whelmed at the prospect of a third iron man movie like a month ago or w/e, but somehow i was DELIGHTED from like the first five seconds of im3 on. the first iron man movie made me have emotions about tony stark, who is not really my kind of male character if u just go by tropes i like and this one went hard with that, especially:

he was having panic attacks?? acknowledging that he IS HAVING ANXIETY ISSUES, and then with the end credits scene, showing he is trying (in a weird tony stark way) to seek help bc it doesnt magically disappear? seeing a character having a panic attack and being aware of that outside a highly specific dramatic context is so SO SO weird but in an AMAZING WAY. mental wellness!! acknowledging reactions to trauma!!! in a MARVEL MOVIE!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!!!
i was surprised by how strong the story was on an emotional level and IT WAS MOSTLY ABOUT HOW GREAT PEPPER IS and how messed up tony is. like, even though the whole time i was thinking “U SAW HER TAKE EXTREMIS, WEIRDO,” i guess what needed to happen on that one level is that tony fought on without pepper, and then she saved him anyway. and WHAT DID HE SAY AT LIKE THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE? THAT SHE WAS ALL THAT WAS KEEPING HIM FROM FALLING APART? WOW. there were just a lot of lovely little emotional ties like that!! them both thinking at different times that the other one was dead, and they are both delightfully proven wrong!!; tony not needing the suits once she saved him; NOT NEEDING THE SUITS = NO MORE ARC REACTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! really good really satisfying.
remember when both the other movies played ooh scary overseas terrorism straight but in this movie freakin guy pearce in a plaid suit is behind everything AND ooh scary terrorism is a ruse. what the hell. so great

the ONLY THING i was Unhappy w/ was rebecca hall’s (maya?) ultimate storyline. i was so excited bc when do two women in marvel movies to share that much screen time and they’re on the same lvl and working together??? that happens in like thor! but then oops shes evil. OOPS. OOPS. screw u. but other than that jeez i loved a lot of it. EVEN THE PART WITH THE KID? YES, ITS LIKE YOU DONT KNOW ME

i keep thinking about that episode of dr who like of the problems i had w/ it, two were explained/not true:

the doctor being A LOT wrt clara and the tardis self-destruct thing
implied doctor as doctor frankenstein, it was cute that clara said that, BUT WEIRD THAT IT HAPPENED

so as it happened i was like oh ok this episode isnt as bad as i was thinking. and i have read multiple Intentionally Messed-Up Fics where the doctor knowingly erases shit and at least the episode ACKNOWLEDGED it, u know. but then the way that should work is that the balance of power is somehow restored, i.e. clara remembers somehow (which u can do bc u are a sci fi show). so like ugh. w/e. why not a cozy tardis bottle episode, why cant i have nice things

its a love story. he had his hand on her shoulder. “sorry.”
the judgment wrt both the unnecessary mystery storyline AND the dr’s behavior in “isn’t that enough?” about clara. i don’t have it in me to hope that that’s an overall indication about her mystery but like wow.
